COALGAN STOP BLEEDING HEMOSTATIC AND HEALING WICKS
Descriptions
Coalgan Stops Bleeding is a local haemostatic.
How does it work?
Coalgan is a calcium alginate and as the name suggests, it contains calcium ions. When Coalgan is introduced into the nostril, it comes into contact with the blood. A painless reaction occurs: Coalgan releases its calcium ions and becomes charged with sodium ions contained in the blood. This is known as ion exchange.
Why calcium ions?
Calcium ions are essential to the functioning of the body and are involved in many processes such as nerve impulses, blood pressure, heart rhythm, etc. Calcium ions are also an essential factor in stopping bleeding.
How does Coalgan stop bleeding?
On contact with the blood, the calcium ions (Ca++) contained in the calcium alginate are released into the wound. The calcium ions released in this way add to the calcium ions naturally present in the blood. This ‘external aid’ encourages platelet aggregation and blood clot formation, thus stopping bleeding.
The calcium/sodium exchange has the effect of gelling the fibres that make up Coalgan. Removal is then easy and painless: Coalgan does not stick to the nasal mucosa, which also prevents the risk of further bleeding on removal. Calcium ions also stimulate the action of key healing cells.
Directions for use
Carefully read the instructions on the leaflet before use.
Nosebleed:
- Tilt head forward, blow nose to remove clots.
- Tear open the sachet of Coalgan following the dotted line.
- Twist Coalgan to obtain a compact wick (Coalgan may be impregnated with 0.9% NaCl saline to facilitate its introduction into the nostril).
- Introduce Coalgan. Pinch both nostrils for 10 minutes.
- Leave Coalgan in place for at least 30 minutes and a maximum of 24 hours. Use the sachet to dispose of it.
Skin bleeding (cuts, abrasions, puncture sites):
- Clean the wound with soap and water, or saline (0.9% NaCl).
- Apply Coalgan to the lesion and remove it when the bleeding stops.
Oral bleeding (lips, gums, tongue...):
- Apply to the lesion.
- Remove Coalgan when bleeding stops.
Any fibres remaining after removal of Coalgan are eliminated naturally. Coalgan can be used with lidocaine-naphazoline. Persistent bleeding requires medical advice. Sterile product, sterilised by ß-radiation. Do not resterilise.
Precautions for use
Coalgan may be moistened to facilitate its introduction into the nostril. When moisteningCoalgan, never use sterile water, only use a 0.9% NaCl solution (physiological saline): the Na+ ions of the NaCl solution exchange with the Ca 2+ ions ofCoalgan, allowing gelation and painless removal ofCoalgan. Check the integrity of the sachet before using the product.
Cautions
Always use Coalgan in its entirety (no cutting, no fraying). Coalgan should not be left in place for more than 24 hours. Single use only. Do not reuse due to risk of microbial contamination and loss of performance.
Interactions
Coalgan must not be used with alkaline solutions, such as sodium hypochlorite solutions, or solutions containing chlorhexidine, benzalkonium chloride or copper salts. If such products are used on the wound, rinse thoroughly with a 0.9% NaCl solution before applying Coalgan.
Adverse reactions
Coalgan contains traces of surfactant and may cause hypersensitivity reactions in some sensitised subjects.
