Botanical appearance: The Bitter orange was one of the citrus fruits introduced to Europe by the Crusaders. Its pure white flowers have a sweet, soothing scent. Its fruit, the bitter orange, is darker and smaller than the sweet orange, and is not eaten fresh. The term ‘petit grain’ refers to the size of the fruit at the time of harvesting and distillation.
